Research Study on Undocumented Students

Research Study on Undocumented Students-CLAREMONT GRADUATE UNIVERSITY
(Rest assured no personal information will be collected to protect people's privacy. FYI, the questionnaire may be filled out by anyone who is a current OR former undocumented immigrant. )

We are conducting a research study to understand the educational experiences of immigrant students. The primary goal of the study is to gather empirical evidence to inform California legislators on their vote on a California Senate bill (SB160, California Dream Act) that if passed would provide financial aid to undocumented students to go to college in California. We also hope to inform congressional senators on their vote on a federal bill (S2075, Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act) that if passed would provide financial aid to undocumented students to go to college and it would help them begin the process toward legal residence. Participation in this study involves completing an online survey.

We are interested in the following individuals:* Students currently undocumented* Students or college graduates who used to be undocumented but are now permanent residents or citizens.
To protect the identity of students, we will not collect names, ddresses, phone numbers or any other type of identifying information. Participants will be paid $10. If you would like to participate or have additional questions about the study, our contact info is below:

IMMIGRANT STUDENT PROTEST IN DEFENSE OF IN-STATE TUITION

PRESS RELEASE

IMMIGRANT STUDENT PROTEST IN HOUSTON

TIME/LOCATION/ CHANGED SEE ABOVE!

IMMIGRANT STUDENTS PROTEST IN DEFENSE OF IN-STATE TUITION
Houston, Tx. Immigrant students in Houston have mobilized in protest of Republican led attacks on HB 1403- a law that grants in-state tuition to students who have completed at least three years in a Texas high school. A repeal of this law would create a serious impediment to immigrant students who wish to attend college since many come from low-income families and would not be able to afford the significantly higher out-of-state tuition rates for Texas colleges and universities. Members of JIFM- Jovenes Inmigrantes por un Futuro Mejor (Young Immigrants for a Better Future) plan to demonstrate in front of Congressman Culberson’s Houston office; John Culberson is one of the sponsors of Federal legislation that would withhold federal funds from colleges and universities that would allow immigrant students to pay in-state tuition.

Students will protest dressed in CAPS and GOWNS and with HANDS TIED BEHIND THEIR BACKS to symbolize how such anti-immigrant legislation would negatively affect students who are seeking to attend colleges and universities in Texas.

HB1403THREATENED:TOPIC DISCUSSED @ RETREAT!!

Hello everyone,

YOUR FUTURE IS BEING TREATHENED AND YOU NEED TO DO SOMETHINGABOUT IT!! JIFM-UH has a mission and purpose and for that reason we need YOU to help us this summer to work on staving off the attack to repeal instate tuition for immigrant students (SB 1528 formally known as HB 1403). We face a most serious challenge from those who are being flamed into action to overturn SB 1528 by AM radio personalities, a Texas Republican Platform, independents such as Kinky Freemen and State Comptroller Strayhorn along with US Congressman John Culberson.

06.13.06
Culberson Amendments Adopted by House Appropriations Committee
Today, Representative John Culberson (R-TX) successfully added two amendments to the FY2007 Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations Bill. The first amendment prohibits federal funds in the bill from being used to provide in-state tuition rates to illegal immigrants.

"The Appropriations Committee approved my amendment today to enforce existing federal law which prohibits state universities from giving illegal aliens in state tuition rates or other education benefits unless the university also grants those same benefits and in-state tuition rates to students from all 50 states. Texas and eight other states have passed laws granting in-state tuition to illegal aliens, and I will work to make sure that Texas and these other states have time to act, but these state laws must be repealed because they violate federal law and defy common sense," Congressman Culberson said. (FOR MORE INFORMATION VISIT:

REPORT FROM JIFM-TEXAS RETREAT:
ALTHOUGH, WE TRIED TO HAVE FUN AT THE RETREAT NEAR FRIO RIVER IN CENTRAL TEXAS, IT WAS HARD TO STOP THINKING ABOUT HOW DANGEROUS THIS AMENDEMENT IS TO OUR HB1403 STUDENTS AND HOW MANY LIVES WULL BE AFFECTED AND FUTURES CHANGED IF WE DON'T FIGHT FOR THE RIGHT OF -EDUCATION FOR ALL TEXANS-. IT IS ESPECIALLY THREATENING TO THE THOUSANDS OF TEXAS HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES WHO WANT TO CONTINUE AND HAVE A RIGHT TO THEIR EDUCATION IN A STATE THAT WOULD ONLY BENEFIT FROM HAVING EDUCATED AND PRODUCTIVE CITIZENS.

THIS SUMMER ALONG WITH PREPARING FOR THE FALL SEMESTER, JIFM-UH WILL TAKE ON A HUGE TASK. A TASKS THAT ALL HB 1403 STUDENTS SHOULD TAKE INTRESTS IN DOING.. RECRUITING!!!
